Having a brighter and whiter smile is something I am always trying to achieve! I wouldn’t say that I’m not confident in my current smile, but I would be lying if I said I was completely happy with it. I’m a big coffee drinker and have always been nervous that my coffee habits would stain my teeth overtime. I’ve used different teeth whitening products and toothpastes on and off and always love trying out natural teeth whitening remedies. A few weeks ago I read this quote on instagram that left me thinking about my teeth: “Keep smiling, because life is a beautiful thing and there’s so much to smile about.” - Marilyn Monroe This was back in the end of August and after checking out my teeth in the mirror, I decided it was time to try to a new teeth whitening kit or product. The last time I had whitened my teeth was for my wedding in 2017! I was overdue! I was interested in finding a professional at-home teeth whitening kit, something I never used before like drug store whitening strips or store-bought gels with generic trays. I have definitely spent a good amount of money on those over the years but never fell in love with any specific kind of brand. So I took to instagram to start my search and read reviews; I even started making a list of options! I was really happy to read that Smile Brilliant is vegan and cruelty-free, a huge plus for me!” I was so excited to try Smile Brilliant because it seemed like everything I was searching for! I did my research, read tons of verified reviews from their website, and I was really happy that the products were vegan and cruelty-free. I was intrigued with the idea of receiving a custom kit with custom-fitted trays! I had the option to do this with my dentist when I inquired for my wedding but the prices were well over $1,000 and the scheduling seemed hectic, it’s just not something I had the budget or time for. Plus, I always loved at-home teeth whitening and just always found it easier and more affordable! About Smile Brilliant Smile Brilliant was created by a team of dental professionals with more than 30 years of teeth whitening experience. Their teeth whitening process is recommenced by more dentist than any other whitening process in America. I am so surprised I never heard of them before trying them! “After realizing that more than 70% of the cost & time associated with professional teeth whitening revolves around trips to the dentist (office "chair time"), we decided to develop a system that allows our customers to make their own dental impressions. By eliminating a trip to the dentist, we eliminate much of the cost you would otherwise pay.” The Smile Brilliant website is easy to navigate and they make it easy to understand how their system works. You can shop their system (the complete kit) or purchase individual products like the whitening gel, desensitizing gel, electric toothbrush, or their night guards. The whitening system is offered in both sensitive and non-sensitive and both have three options for their systems: light stains, average stains, or heavy stains. Each kit contains a different amount of whitening and desensitizing applications. All of their kits contain professional lab service, custom-fitted teeth whitening trays, two impression trays, three sets of impression material, three way postage, and professional teeth whitening gel and desensitizing gel. I opted for the sensitive whitening system for my sensitive teeth. The Smile Brilliant System My kit arrived quickly and was packaged nicely and very organized. I love how professional everything looks and how much material they include. They really make sure you have everything you need to get started! I love the step-by-step instruction cards with photos and individual instruction cards for each step. Check out my instagram video here. The first step is to complete an included consent card and make your impressions. You need a stop watch, some paper towels, and a mirror. You receive a two-party putty that is mixed by hand and placed into a tray. You then press the mold into your teeth to make the impression. Their guide walks you through each step of the way! You complete one tray for your upper teeth and one for your lower. They include extra mixture in case you make a mistake the first time around - which I did! Unfortunately my first set of upper impressions came out with a heavy scraping on the tray wall, which would have not been able to be fixed by the lab. To avoid this, you want to make sure your teeth are centered on the putty and make sure the impression has completely hardened in the mouth before removing it. Luckily, they include a dental impression retake sheet which is helpful in determining whether or not your molds will work for the lab. One you are done creating your molds, you easily ship them back using the provided shipping bag and postage. When the lab receives your molds, they create your custom-fit dental trays and mail them back to you within five business days. Using the Smile Brilliant System I was so excited when my trays came in the mail and was super impressed with the excellent fit! These trays fit better then my night guard that was custom made by my dentist! I was thrilled that there were no issues with my trays fitting correctly and excited to start whitening. Check out my instagram video here The whitening process is very easy. Each syringe of desensitizing gel or whitening gel should provide three to four applications for the top and bottom). Before you begin, you brush your teeth with water to remove any food particles. You can then use your desensitizing gel first by applying about 1/3 of the gel to your custom fit trays and leaving them in for 15-20 minutes. Rinse your trays with cold water and spit out any remaining gel but do not rinse or brush your teeth after this step. Next, you apply 1/3 of the whitening gel to your trays, dry your teeth to the best of your ability, and wear them for up to three hours, depending on your sensitivity. Because I am sensitive I decided to start slow and make a whitening schedule. I officially started on October 8th with a 45-minute session and gradually increased the time. In total, I completed six sessions and the time frames varied. My sessions were as follows: October 8th (45 minutes), October 11th (2 hours), October 13th (1.5 hours), October 15th (1.5 hours), October 19 (2 hours), and October 24th (1.5 hours). Smile Brilliant recommend starting with shorter applications and gradually increasing if you experience little to no sensitivity and not whitening more than one day. After the very first session I was really surprised to see my teeth already looked whiter and was pleasantly surprised that I did not experience any sensitivity! Could be the desensitizing gel doing it’s job! Luckily for me, I did not experience any major sensitivity during any part of this whitening process! I only had two small issues when it came to whitening: finding the time to use it and feeling like I had to spit every second I had them in! Overall, I found it slightly hard to make the time to wear these for one to three hours without having other things to do, phone calls to make, or knowing I wouldn’t be eating or drinking afterwards. Also, I am not sure if I am just not use to wearing custom-fitted trays, but I found myself drooling and feeling the need to spit a lot while having these in. These two things did not prevent me from continuing to whiten though! Smile Brilliant recommends whitening at night before bed to reduce the opportunity for new staining and to give your teeth the night to rehydrate and remineralize. Is Smile Brilliant Safe? Smile Brilliant has some information on their website regarding how safe their teeth whitening system is. “Studies from the Academy of General Dentistry, (AGD Impact, April 1998, p.23), during the past five years have proven the lab direct teeth whitening process to be safe and effective. A small percentage of people may experience some tooth sensitivity and gum irritation, which disappears once you stop using the Hi-Intensity Whitening Gel or by decreasing the amount of time you use the whitening system.” - Smile Brilliant I recommend consulting with your doctor and dentist prior to using, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or may become pregnant. Keep in mind, conclusive research has not yet been done on the safety of teeth whitening while pregnant or nursing. Smile Brilliant's Teeth Whitening Gel Ingredients - Glycerin (thickens and controls the flow of the substance from overextending to the gum tissues), Carbamide Peroxide (oxidizing agent that penetrates the enamel to break down the stain deposits), Carbomer (used as a thickening agent and also acts as an emulsion stabilizer, preventing separation of the solution), Menthol (added for flavor purpose), & EDTA (responsible for removing surface proteins & bacteria debris creating an ideal atmosphere for the oxygenation process to begin.) I was really happy to find a vegan and cruelty-free teeth whitening system and now I am even more happy that this system works great for me! My biggest fear when it comes to teeth whitening is ruining my enamel and I am glad to say that this product does not damage enamel. I only felt slight sensitivity to my upper teeth once or twice throughout the entire whitening process which is great because I have definitely had issues with certain whitening products in the past. While I was a bit skeptical as to how much this could really whiten my teeth, I think it worked great for the amount of sessions and time I completed. It’s important to remember that no teeth whitening product can work whiten minutes or a day, so don’t expect a miracle! It’s also important to remember that artificial caps and veneers will not whiten nor stain. By now, you have probably heard of CBD and it's many benefits, or maybe you have even seen the Not Pot gummies around social media. My curiosity in CBD products peaked a while ago and I have really wanted to see how CBD could help me with my anxiety and daily mood. I have also read some great things about CBD skincare and beauty products but I will save that for another post! It's been 60 days today since I started taking these delicious strawberry flavored vegan polar bear gummies from Not Pot and I'm hooked on them! So what is CBD? According to my research, cannabidiol (CBD) is a phytocannabinoid discovered in 1940 and is one of more than a hundred cannabinoids in cannabis plants and accounts for up to 40% of the plant's extract (Health.com). It is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety effects. In 2018, clinical research on cannabidiol included preliminary studies of anxiety, cognition, movement disorders, and pain (Wikipedia). Unlike CBD's cousin tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychoactive so it will not get you high or give off any euphoric effects. Because CBD is sourced from hemp (not marijuana) it is legally available to anyone in the United States, Health.com. And just to avoid any confusion, hemp and marijuana are not the same. Hemp is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant and hemp oil products usually do not contain CBD or THC. It's important to know the difference because sometimes these terms are misused when it comes to CBD products. It's also important to keep in mind that some CBD products may contain THC, so be sure to to read all of the product information and ask the company questions when you feel unsure. Don't be shy! What does CBD help with? According to my research, CBD can help treat a wide variety of health issues including anxiety, depression, acne, epilepsy, chronic pain, glaucoma, insomnia, loss of appetite, muscle spams, parkinson's disease, and more. "It’s also said that CBD oil can promote sounder sleep, reduce inflammation and pain, fight oxidative stress, improve heart health, support weight loss, and protect against some forms of cancer" (Verywellhealth). There are many articles and studies that support these claims and I recommend researching the health issues you are curious about and consulting with your physician to see if CBD is right for you. What are Not Pot CBD Gummies? My 60-Day Review Today officially marks 60-days of consuming one, or sometimes two, of these adorable little bears. In short, I am very happy with my first CBD experience! Not Pot is a great name for their product and their packaging is cute and interesting, but what inside those adorable bottles is what really matters most to me! While I initially wanted to try these to see if it could help with my daily mood (don't want to be a sad girl everyday), I noticed they really helped with my anxiety and period cramps, I didn't even think about how it could help during menstruation so this was a nice surprise! They taste just as delicious as they smell! Some people have mentioned an after taste and this was not something that bothered me. I actually just ate one now to see how I feel about the after taste and while you can taste a hint of "natural" plant taste that lingers for a bit, it's not intense or bothersome to me. The first week I started taking these I did notice some minor digestive issues but couldn't really confirm if it was from the gummies. After the first week, those symptoms dissipated. There has actually been some research that indicates the use of CBD may have side effects like anxiety, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth, changes in mood, or changes in appetite. At no point did I suffer from any of these symptoms, besides having a positive change in my mood and appetite! I have also read that some people feel slightly high after consuming CBD products, not specifically not pot, but that these types of people usually often suffer from side effects from traditional over-the-counter medicines like Advil or Tylenol. This is definitely something to keep in mind if medicines, supplements, or vitamins tend to make you feel sick. You really don't know how your body will react to a new supplement and if you have never taken CBD before I recommend first trying it when you're home with someone, just to be on safe side if you experience any side effects. Often I find that some supplements, vitamins, or hair and nail gummies cause acne and irritation to my skin but luckily these did not at all! After the first month I was like, "keep these posi surprises coming Not Pot!" Now, I am not going to say these are a miracle, that I am now that happiest person alive, or that I took one and it worked right away, but what I will say is that these have helped me tremendously in different ways. When I first started using these back in early June I was very high strung and always felt "on the edge". After my very first gummy I didn't notice a huge change in anything... I felt slightly more relaxed than normal but my anxiety was through the roof the day I started these and I was hoping for more. So... what does the FDA say about CBD, are there any safety concerns? There's a lot research to be done. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wants the public to know that cannabidiol (CBD) might not be as safe and effective in the grand scheme of their overall health and wellness. While the FDA does admit that they do not have a real understanding of the benefits or potential risks with CBD, a limited study on their CBD-based epilepsy drug called Epidiolex, found that liver damage can be a side effect. My best advise is to always do your research and to consult with your physician, especially if you are taking medications or supplements. Things to keep in mind when shopping for CBD Products: CBD does not cure any of these diseases or cancer and it's important to have realistic expectations when taking CBD products. You should search for products that 100% all-natural, organic, and vegan and do not contain THC (or at least under .03% THC). You should also check the products to make sure they do not contain synthetic chemicals or chemical solvents and are naturally-flavored with no artificial flavors or ingredients. Also, it's really nice to shop products from companies that are transparent and showcase lab results. Not all CBD products are created equally. There are many new CBD products and companies popping up right now and some of them are making false claims or misleading consumers. Now this can get pretty overwhelming but there are companies that seem to use a CBD (isolate) spray on gummies which will not work the same as a company who uses proven extraction methods like CO2 extraction, which compresses as much CBD as possible from the raw hemp material. While I unfortunately was not easily able to find information on how Not Pot manufacturer's their gummies from their website, I was able to find graphics (below) from their website that say "No cheap CBD isolates here" and another that says their "research is led by Israel's top PhD scientists, and medical-experts who have co-authorized ore than 160 scientific publications and secured over 46 patents in the space." I checked all of the available information on their website to see if they shared any lab tests, but could not find anything. Also, their Frequently Asked Questions page is not working for me, so I couldn't check there! However, after reaching out to Not Pot through Instagram, by asking "Hey! Quick question, do you guys use CO2 extraction? Or any nanotechnololgy?" the brand promptly responded, "Gentle CO2 but sometimes nano and co2 can be the same thing." And while digging in deeper, I also found a website that was really helpful and had a few questions and answers from Kati from Not Pot. Someone asked, "Can you speak to quality control of your product? A peer reviewed study found many CBD products contained CBD levels different than advertised and some actually did have THC. I’ve heard even hemp has low levels of THC. Do you have third party analysis for example, confirming substance levels in your product? Many thanks for your thoughts on this."
